This phenomenon, also known as granular convention, occurs when the largest particles in a mixture of different sized objects end up on the surface. Scientists are still not sure about it, according to a popular theory, it could be due to the difference in density. Another reason for this could be that the particles are too big to fit in the spaces on the sides of the jar. Lesson learned: what goes down, must come up!
